MICROFLUID - Mental Stream (NEW LINK!)
MICROFLUID - "Mental Stream" (2008) (LINK UPDATED!)
Experimental ambient outlet Microfluid helps us segue from I/O Netlabel into Mexico's Flumo Netlabel, and their experimental sublabel, Fluidos!
Please note that this EP was originally realsed at a bitrate of 256 kbps. No 320 kbps version exists.
*originally posted March 9, 2008:
Here's the album description from Flumo's website:
From the Russian Federation comes Fluidos’ new signing, a young man known as Microfluid, music-eater since a kid, Kraftwerk-lover and long ago devoted to the most minimal techno. In his debut with Flumo netlabel, he flatters our ears with four tracks which fuse with pure experimental minimal; sound abstractions, almost beatless, with odd percussions subtly setting the rhythm, basing the compositions in atmospheres near the ambient. Kooky sounds – such as a baby’s cry or a man delivering a speech robotic-like – will catch your attention. After reading all this you can imangine that Microfluid’s pieces fit perfectly with Flumo’s more experimental line.

(With this release, Growling Mad Scientists officially turns 20 this year!)
The debut 12" Goa release from now-legendary psytrance masters, GMS! The title track is very aptly named, as it is very much like hurtling forward on a swirly, whirly, looping rail, laughing and squealing with excitement along the way. Commental and Clear Vision are very solid and hypnotic tracks, as well! A must-have for Goa/psy fans!

I WAS A TEENAGE STRANGLER - Original Soundtrack by Severed Lips Recordings
I WAS A TEENAGE STRANGLER - Original Soundtrack by Severed Lips Recordings (1998)
What to say about this movie, other than it's a heck of a good reaction movie, meaning it is a fun movie to show to other people to watch their reactions. This movie garnered an underground cult following, because it was softcore/B-movie actress Misty (Erin Brown) Mundae's on-screen debut as a sassy, druggie party-goer appearing in the film's second half. The film itself, wielding a transgression and budget that makes early John Waters films look like Hallmark movies, concerns itself with Winston Strange (pronounced Strangé), who decides to throw a totally bitchin' house party, inviting random high school students from all over town to attend. The kids arrive with their attitudes and deviant behaviors (and good lord, some of these people are complete lunatics) in tow, and they all start to get loose. Little do they know, Winston planned this party as a welcome home party, of sorts, for his deranged brother, Miles, who happens to have an uncontrollable strangulation fetish - oh, and who also happens to have just escaped from (walked out of) the nearby psychiatric institution. Needless to say, countless throats are throttled until one terrified teenager (Misty/Erin) is left.
I know you're thinking, what's so crazy about that description that makes this such a good "reaction movie"? Oh, believe me. This gets crazy over-the-top and offensive. For instance, there's an extremely graphic coat hanger abortion scene (and I do mean graphic), which I have seriously lost friends over. But whatever, it's just a movie. If you can't laugh at life, you can't laugh with me.
ANYWAY - The soundtrack is extremely fitting to the movie. Severed Lips' (officially naming their film outlet 'Factory 2000' with this movie) films were known for their trippy, bare-bones synth and grunge/garage rock soundtracks, primarily because Severed Lips was first and foremost a lineup of local New Jersey bands, whose members made up a meat of the cast from the label's early films. If you like this music, check out the Caress of the Vampire 2: Teenage Ghoul Girl-A-Go-Go soundtrack, or better yet, check out the FREE archive of a massive chunk of Severed Lips Recordings' music!

HEAVY RAIN - Additional Music From The Quantic Dream Game
HEAVY RAIN - Additional Music From The Quantic Dream Game (2011)
Here's another little something that I whipped up yesterday: the complete - at least, I'm pretty darn sure it's complete - collection of all of the music that was used in the video game, Heavy Rain, that did not appear on the official soundtrack, which came as a free download with the Director's Cut of the game. While the official soundtrack by Norman Corbeil is chill-inducing and amazing, I was hoping that some of the other songs and music within the game would be included on the soundtrack when I purchased the Director's Cut of the game. Hopefully, I have remedied that. There are some damn good songs in this collection, and it features a lot more electronic music than I remember from the game. I even threw in a couple of remixes for good measure. Hope everyone digs this!

L.A. NOIRE - On The Air: KTI Radio
L.A. NOIRE - On The Air: KTI Radio (2011)
Here's a little something I whipped up yesterday, as I am currently beak-deep in the PS3 game. This is every song and radio part featured in the game's "radio station", which is heard while driving, and inside various buildings throughout the game, pieced together to form a recreation of an actual radio broadcast! We have station bumpers, advertisements for products found inside the game, public service announcements, news broadcasts relevant to the game's plot and to the era, an extensive musical soundtrack and 4 full radio episodes - two 10-minute episodes of The Bickersons, a 30-minute episode of The Jack Benny Show and a 30-minute episode of The Charlie McCarthy Show! This was a lot of fun to piece together (I found all of the radio bits at this Video Game Music site), but it is even more fun to listen to! I suggest listening to this at night, at a somewhat lower volume, while relaxing with a drink and/or a smoke (if that's your thing), but this is enjoyable at any time of the day. Get ready to take a trip back in time, to the year 1947!

MY GIRL / MY GIRL 2 - Original Motion Picture Soundtracks
MY GIRL / MY GIRL 2 - Original Motion Picture Soundtracks
Since I'm starting up another wave of soundtacks, I figured these were essential, as both the movies and the soundtrack albums were deeply essential to my childhood. I had a minor obsession with these films when they came out (I was 11 years old when the first film was released, and it really hit me hard). I also fell madly in love with actress Anna Chlumsky, and I was so sure in my 5th grader brain that I would someday grow up to marry her, and have her be Mrs. Anna Hummingbird. Ah, young crushes. But I digress.
These soundtracks are excellent, and a total time capsule of the late 60s - early/mid 70s.

REDNECK ZOMBIES - Music To Die For - Original Film Score Composed By Adrian Bond
REDNECK ZOMBIES - Music To Die For - Original Film Score Composed By Adrian Bond (1988)
This soundtrack came as a 2nd disc in the limited edition of the 20th Anniversary release of the "Tromasterpiece", Redneck Zombies, one of Troma Team Video's biggest selling movie titles. The movie is everything the title suggests, and then some. From the DVD sleeve: "When a clan of hillbilly dirt farmers turn a misplaced barrel of chemical waste into a whiskey still, going blind is the least of their worries as the toxic moonshine turns them into REDNECK ZOMBIES! Now they're ready to invite a group of wayward yankees to a down-home feast of southern-fried gore and mayhem that will turn your stomach and tickle your funny bone! So, grab a seat and set a spell with your favorite gut-chompin', tobacco-chewin' cannibal kinfolk from Hell in REDNECK ZOMBIES!"
And it's no lie, I love this soundtrack just as much as I love the movie. What seems like a cheesy, bare-bones synth score when paired with the cheesy, bare-bones (but wonderfully entertaining) movie is a whole different ball game when listened to as its own entity. This score is legitimately awesome, with some extremely fun, and even trippy, synth compositions that are way ahead of their time. Defintely recommended for Troma fans, soundtrack buffs, and fans of synth music.

Another album that I grew up with which is now next to impossible to find; I really don't know how to describe this music, other than perhaps a combination of The B-52's, Deee-Lite and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. Super original and artsy dance pop from the early 90s... how can you not love it?

DR. PSYCHEDELIC - Cosmic Chemistry
DR. PSYCHEDELIC - Cosmic Chemistry (1998)
Here's a slightly obscure oddity, the Goa-ish dub album from Dr. Psychedelic, Cosmic Chemistry. Doc Psy is Jake Stephenson, who had a slew, nay, an arsenal of Goa trance and ambient aliases for the multi-genre electronic label, Rumour Records, such as: Shamanic Tribes On Acid (a favorite of mine), Alien Mutation, Mekhala, Curly Whirly Spirits, Psychoheads and The Pot Heads, just to name a few.
Cosmic Chemistry is a strange and fun ride, effortlessly shifting from effervescent Goa sounds to deep dub, and then combining the two for a truly original and trippy listen.

NIKO - Up Your Acid (1998)
This awesome album was a staple in my late teens/early twenties. I have listened to it many, many times, and can play the entire thing from start to finish in my mind, as I have memorized virtually every sound it contains. Here is hoping that some of you take to this album the same way I did. A multi-mood journey through the kingdom of acid techno and breaks, produced by the late and talented Nicolai Vorkapich, Up Your Acid is a true electronic work of art.

Here is volume 2 of my new series of Goa/psytrance compilations, exclusively for this blog. I hope everyone enjoys these, they are a lot of fun to compile. The vibe here is a bit different than volume 1, starting out with some mellow progressive trance which stretches out into some nighttime psy, capped off with some swirly-whirly Goa trance to leave your brain, ears and feet begging for more.

RABID HUMMINGBIRD - Psychedelic Hummingbird v1
Here is the first in (hopefully) many psychedelic compilations brought to you by your very own foam-beaked bird buddy! This first volume was originally titled 'Another Psychedelic Adventure' and was a compilation that I had made and posted back in November of 2008, before I abandoned my nest to fly south for 8 years. As I was sprucing things up from crummy 192 kbps bit rate to a happy 320 (all, except for the Tandu track, which is 256 kbps), I had the idea of starting up a massive wave of psychedelic trance and Goa trance compilations exclusively for my fellow fowl friends. Play these compilations loud and shake your tail feathers!

BOOM DEVIL - Rumble
BOOM DEVIL - Rumble (2001)
A couple of years before Flying Rhino Records called it quits (or, more accurately, took a 10-year + hiatus, as they have returned in recent years, releasing a few new EPs), they decided to make a bold move and take a step away from the pigeonhole of trance, and enter the world of downtempo, dub and ambient music. And, boy, was it good! This is one of the more popular titles from their sub-label, Flying Rhino Freestyle. A deep, mellow blissout to make your body and soul tingle.

CODE - Light Years / Parsifal 12" (1992)
Here's a really nice 12" release from Code. Parsifal was later remixed and used in the Planet Dog Records compilation, 'Feed Your Head Vol. 2'. The versions appearing on this release are very similar in tone and vibe, but maybe a bit more minimal. Light Years kicks up the energy slightly and makes for a good old-fashioned organic techno dance tune.

SOMETHING WEIRD - Storybook Sessions Vol. 2 - Freddytrippin'
SOMETHING WEIRD - Storybook Sessions Vol. 2 - Freddytrippin' (2014)
Okay, prepare yourselves, because this is CRAZY! Something Weird has once again created a "psychedelic reworking" of an audio book, but this time, instead of going the kiddie record route, he opted for a darker approach, choosing to add his unique brand of low-fi sonic wizardry to the cassette tape retelling of the 1989 horror sequel, A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child!
Follow Alice, who had previously vanquished the dream-stalking, child-murdering maniac a year before, as she graduates from high school and is ready to move on with her life and blossom into as well-adjusted an adult as she possibly can be, considering her haunted, blood-stained past. But, of course, Freddy Kruger slithers his way back into her reality, using the dreams of her unborn baby to gain the power to slaughter all of those around her. Will she save her friends, her baby, and her sanity?
Once again, this is no ordinary audio book. This is tweaked and remixed to the Nth hoop and back, and will make your brain gasp for air. I guess these are meant to be listened to while under the influence of mind-altering substances, but people, I gotta tell you, I'd be afraid I would never come back after listening to these. Use your own discretion! ;-)

SOMETHING WEIRD - Storybook Sessions Vol. 1 - Annietrippin'
SOMETHING WEIRD - Storybook Sessions Vol. 1 - Annietrippin' (2012)
And now for something completely different:
Whoa. This is one of the most mind-melting things I have ever heard. Not exactly techno, this is "a psychedelic reworking of the 1982 children's record, 'Feeling Good With Annie'". There is a story to be found among the swirling, echoing cacophony of strangeness.
Whether you are familiar with the story of Little Orphan Annie or not, trying to follow along with the plot of the story is a fun part of the fractured, trippy-as-balls brain-scramble that is this album. But let me help you out a bit: Annie is no longer an orphan, and has been adopted by Oliver Warbucks, the richest man in the world. One day, as she is walking on perpetual sunshine, she walks into the foyer of the Warbucks mansion to see that a "travelling fitness salesman", who is peddling his services door to door, has been let inside by an unnecessarily irate Warbucks. The fitness salesman soon has the entire gang doing calisthenics in the park, along with a group of public park-goers who have been rounded up against their wills to join in the jazzercize action, jamming along to (thanks to Something Weird, now blisteringly scrambled) instrumental renditions of songs from the hit musical!
Something Weird is David Totty, who hails from Colorado, USA (and is a fellow GusGus fan, apparently, there is an EP of remixes of GusGus' 'Airwaves' track on his Bandcamp page!!).
If you like this album, be sure to check out Volume 2, which is equally as (if not more) strange, and deals with one of everyone's favorite movie madmen: Freddy Krueger!

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Trance Anthology
VARIOUS ARTISTS - Trance Anthology (1997)
Here's another interesting and oddball Goa trance compilation. What makes this so unique is that while this is not a continuous DJ mix, all of the tracks have been significantly shortened, edited and/or remixed, presumably for the sake of being able to add more than the standard 8-10 tracks usually included in a trance compilation. I especially like the versions of 'LSD' and 'This' found on this disc, but they unfortunately fade out a little too soon. But still, this rare quirk alone makes this album worth adding to your collection.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - UO@604 (Unknown Object At: Six Zero Four)
VARIOUS ARTISTS - UO@604 (Unknown Object At: Six Zero Four) (1999)
* From CD insert:
This CD would not have been possible without the globe-spanning, barrier-breaking, consciousness-connecting system known as The Internet. In May 1996 the Goa Mailing List was started to bring together like-minded Goa/psychedelic trance fans. The numbers soon grew as more and more people found out about it. Eventually, due to some name confusion with the Gun Owners of America, it was decided that the list's name should be changed. Legend has it that one list member mistook the numbers "604" for the word "GOA". We thought it was cool. In a matter of time, we changed the official name to The 604 List. In late June, 1998, murmurs of starting a label or releasing a listee-only CD began to bubble up from the depths of 604. The topic arose with increased frequency, and a few determined trance freaks set out to bring order to the boiling chaos. It was decided that any list member could contribute and that the track selection would be determined by a vote from the members of the list. Some songs were submitted directly over the Internet, others came by mail. All totaled, 18 different artists contributed 34 songs for the project. Each and every song was then encoded in the MP3 format and put up on the web for the listees to download and compare for voting. The votes were tallied. Nine of the original 34 were selected for the final CD. Five different countries are represented on this CD: USA, UK, Norway, Argentina, and the Netherlands. The cover artwork was also selected by votes from the list members. A lot of time and hard work went into this project; we all hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we all enjoyed making it.

OTHERWORLD TRANSMISSION: Chapter One
OTHERWORLD TRANSMISSION: Chapter One (1999)
While this is technically a various artists compilation, all music contained within was written and produced by former Benedictine monk, Michael Godfrey, under various monikers. I originally learned of his music through the UO@604 (Unknown Object At: Six Zero Four) compilation, released by Tranceplant Records, which consisted of tracks selected from a contest on the 604 (That's code for Goa, for those not in the know) internet message board in 1998. This album is quite good, and is a little more uplifting than I expected (his track, 'Amorphism', on the UO@604 compilation was pretty intense) - although it does have its dark spots - and is, overall, a nice little mental journey. Take the trip!
