DARSHAN - Give Me 12" (1995)

A few days ago, I posted Darshan's album, 'Awakening,' and gave a new link for their followup album, 'Spectra,' but did you know that before they began producing pounding, rumbling psychedelic music, Grant Collins and Mark Robinson were creating house music together? It's really not a surprise if you think about it, because there have can be found a heavy house influence in many of their later tracks under labels such as Flying Rhino, Phantasm, Dragonfly and Chaos Unlimited. This 12" was released in 1995 by Ouch! Records Ltd. and features Lisa White on vocals.

ZERO - RAVEnous (1992)

Hey, birdies! I am presenting to you an album that is special to me personally: this is the very first full-on techno album I ever listened to, back in 1992 (I was 12 years old), while on a Baptist church youth rally bus, of all places. This album literally changed my musical perspective and opened up so many doors for me in the future. Immediately, I went from Paula Abdul, MC Hammer and New Kids On The Block to a steady electronic audio diet; the full, lush tree that is my love for electronic music rooted itself right then and there and began to sprout overnight.

Sure it's somewhat dated now, but I still jam this album from time to time. It goes through the entire rigmarole of early 90s techno without ever becoming too cheesy or full of itself. Some of it actually reminds me of early Lords Of Acid - except with a sprinkling of Christian influence, via a couple of audio samples towards the end, but it never gets preachy or heavy-handed; it's more about opening oneself up to love and spreading it around, and hey, what's wrong with a message like that? Especially these days.

Since I'm on the subject of bad Hypnotic/Cleopatra compilations, here's one that really takes the cake. I'm posting it BECAUSE it's bad. It's so bad that you can't not listen to it. The holographic lenticular cover promises its music to be "throbbing at 200 bpm", but technically only two tracks within the entire compilation fit that description. The rest is pretty bad, basic, disposable hard trance and techno. The best part of this compilation is the aforementioned cover art, wherein a naked, masked dominatrix would whip a bound female on the butt, while simultaneously masturbating.
