TROMEO & JULIET - Expanded Motion Picture Soundtrack

HOWDY, HUMMERS! I've been so busy updating my electronic music posts that I nearly forgot to share with you this bad boy, which I put together a few months back. I know I have already posted the official CD soundtrack to Troma's wacky classic Shakespearean parody, Tromeo & Juliet, but over the years (decades), I was somewhat let down by the fact that some of my favorite songs from the movie were nowhere to be found on the OST. Well, now that has been remedied, as this has virtually every song featured in the movie, with the sole exception of the female vocal of "Shall We Gather At The River," because the singer was uncredited in the film's credits. But we now have a soundtrack that does the movie justice, and fans of the movie will no doubt recognize most of the new songs. I hope this makes someone out there happy. Ah, Troma. I wonder what kind of a bird I would be today if I hadn't gleefully corrupted my mind with this film company's gloriously ridiculous and campy low budget insanity at such a young and impressionable age? Psh. I don't think I'd want to know him.

Anyway, this CD was released in 1994 to celebrate 20 years of Troma Team Video madness. It includes theme songs from various movies, as well as audio clips from various trailers and an interview with Troma president and co-founder, Lloyd Kaufman!

I have gathered the original scores and soundtracks, as well as the complete and expanded versions for this collection. Oh, but that's not all, folks. Not by a long shot. We have Tuesday Knight's complete remix album for the Nightmare 4 theme song which was available for a short time exclusively on her website (and was later shortened considerably by demand of the films' production company). Since I'm starting up another wave of soundtacks, I figured these were essential, as both the movies and the soundtrack albums were deeply essential to my childhood. I had a minor obsession with these films when they came out (I was 11 years old when the first film was released, and it really hit me hard). I also fell madly in love with actress Anna Chlumsky, and I was so sure in my 5th grader brain that I would someday grow up to marry her, and have her be Mrs. Anna Hummingbird. Ah, young crushes. But I digress.

These soundtracks are excellent, and a total time capsule of  the late 60s - early/mid 70s.

NIGHT OF THE COMET - Expanded Motion Picture Soundtrack (1984)



When it comes to film soundtracks, this is my biggest guilty pleasure. I ADORE these songs. Completely unknown, yet completely familiar in sound and atmosphere, with some surprisingly catchy (and sometimes filthy - I'm looking at you, 'Let My Fingers Do The Talking') lyrics. This isn't the complete soundtrack, though, as there were a couple of songs I could not track down, but I did the absolute best that I could. This does, however, include the entire 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' cover by Tami Holbrook!

Not only is this one of my favorite soundtracks of the 1980s, it's also one of my favorite films from that decade. Never taking itself too seriously, it has an absolutely stellar atmosphere, incredible use of set design and cinematography, very likable characters and is just a really fun, altogether cheesy good time!

Spend the night in the lawn storage shed and blast these tunes as you welcome the comet, and the red skies to follow! Just beware of those pesky radiation zombies. I'll be waiting for you at the radio station.

A CERTAIN SACRIFICE - Music From The Motion Picture (1984)



This is something I made for my buddy Michael's blog, The Inferno Music Vault, which, sadly, no longer exists. Inferno Music Vault was a blog dedicated to sharing soundtracks, and is where I got my deluxe treasure trove of musical memorabilia from my favorite film series in the history of cinema, A Nightmare On Elm Street. Inferno was (is) the very reason this blog even exists. It was the page that inspired me to create my own little slice of Blogspot Heaven. This is why you see so many different soundtracks here, as I was doing my part in the soundtrack-sharing world, while posting various other musical genres (I'm sorry if you're not a fan of a category/categories that I post, but hey, it's my page and this bird will do what it wants). There would be no Rabid Hummingbird without Michael, so this post is dedicated to him, and to the memory of a fantastic blog page!

So... A Certain Sacrifice. Goodness gracious me, where to even begin with this movie? This is an extremely low (zero) budget student film that a 19-year old Madonna Ciccone (that's simply 'Madonna' to us lowly common folk) desperately pleaded with the director to be involved in after running away from her family to make it in the Big Apple. This was a couple of years before she started singing professionally, and the film itself didn't see the light of day, until (of course) Madonna's career skyrocketed into pop stardom. Madonna allegedly attended the "premiere" of the film, and stood up during the screening and yelled "Fuck you!" and stormed out. She tried to sue the director, Stephen Jon Lewicki, to get all copies pulled from the shelves. Her case was dismissed, but she might as well have won the case, because this has never been officially released on any home video format, although a heap ton of various bootlegs are floating around  (I even saw one in the $5 bin at Walmart).

The film itself concerns Bruna (Madge), a skanky urbanite who leaves behind her "family of lovers" (hey, wow, just like her real life) to be in the arms of Dashiel, an anarchist-teetering-on-sociopath with a chip on his shoulder, whom she bumps into while dancing in a water fountain at the park, and has what appears to be an argument (thankfully dubbed over with music, music you will hear here) that ends with the two of them caressing each other while holding a cheap, plastic water pistol while the in-no-way-involved-with-the-production audience in the park (including a Marilyn Monroe impersonator) looks on with the very same facial expression of confused, awkward wonder that is plastered on your own face. It's uncanny!

Anyway, Bruna is raped (?) - off-screen, thankfully - in the restroom of a diner, by a man whom Dashiel had already verbally whipped on a previous afternoon at the very same diner (how dare this man try to make friendly conversation with me while sitting next to me at the diner's counter?), so Dashiel gathers up Bruna's Love Family to kidnap the man and hold a really bizarre and hokey Rocky Horror-esque revenge sacrifice under a bridge, complete with a chorus of punk/goth chicks, spouting off lyrics that sound like something out of  'Jack & The Beanstalk'. Once Rapey McRaperson is dead, Dashiel tends to Bruna in the bedroom, as he dips his fingers into a plastic chalice, smearing the victim's blood all over her face and breasts, as they make out tenderly. THE END. Yup. Spoiler alert.

I ripped these songs directly from the Walmart bootleg DVD (you think I'm kiddding? It's a DVD-R!), so there are a few snippets of dialogue at the beginning/end of a couple of tracks, and some dialogue I kept in intentionally in an attempt to convey somewhat of a cohesive narrative of the movie, but hey, the movie itself doesn't do a very good job in that department. But I tried! ALSO - it should be noted that not a single Madonna song appears on this soundtrack. At least Lewicki did SOMETHING right!

Caress Of The Vampire 2: Teenage Ghoul Girl A Go-Go - Original Soundtrack (1996)



A really cool lo-fi/indie soundtrack to a really cool lo-fi indie movie. Caress Of The Vampire 2 was the first feature from underground film company, Factory 2000, then called Severed Lips Recordings. These guys made some pretty twisted homemade exploitation features, and led to the "discovery" of softcore erotica/B-horror scream queen, Misty Mundae (now using the name Erin Brown in more "legitmate" films, like 'Dickshark' by Bill Zebub, auteur of such classics as 'Antfarm Dickhole', 'Forgive Me For Raping You' and 'Breaking Her Will' - because, you know, one must expand one's horizons). But these guys were much more than just naughty camcorder flicks. Severed Lips Recordings had a wide arsenal of live indie rock/grunge bands that would play in the NJ area, and this soundtrack showcases some of those bands. As for the founder and head of Severed Lips/Factory 2000, William Hellfire, these days he really IS making more "legitimate" (I hate that word) films, such as the excellent Upsidedown Cross, starring Erin Russ and David Yow (yes, THAT David Yow!), a brilliantly written/executed exorcism drama/thriller. This is the soundtrack to the 1998 low-budget horror-comedy, Psycho Sisters, which was a remake of an even lower-budget movie of the same name from W.A.V.E. Productions. Jane and Jackie witnessed their parents' demises as young children, and later the rape/murder of their younger sister, Janice. Naturally, this causes a bit of emotional stress for the siblings, so they are locked away into an asylum. (Not enough) years later, they are released out into the public with a clean bill of health, so naturally, they instantly embark upon a crazy killing spree, killing any and every man they come across, blaming ALL men for their problems. Until, that is, one of them begins to experience the awakening of her sexual desires. Uh oh, this could cause trouble..

Anyway, check out the movie if you can find it, or are into that sort of thing. It's a lot of fun.  And so is this soundtrack! Stick your beak in and feed!
