APHEX TWIN - "Girl/Boy" EP

APHEX TWIN - "Girl/Boy" EP (1995)

Ok, ok... this is my last R.D.J. album for a little while, I promise (unless someone asks me to keep going...)

This is probably my favorite EP from Aphex Twin, although it is definitely the shortest. 3 of the tracks are under 2 minutes, but are still smashers! The opening track is AMAZING, incorporating classical music with insanely fabulous IDM beats. I can not stop listening to this one!

Also, the song "Milk Man" is one of the funniest Aphex Twin songs ever (running close with "Funny Little Man" from the 'Come To Daddy' EP).

Please enjoy this one. If you like really creative and original electronic music, I can almost promise you you'll love it.

POWERPILL - "Pacman" EP

POWERPILL - "Pacman" (1992)

Powerpill Pacman! Surely the name alone is enough to spark some curiosity in you...

This is a single by Richard D. James (From Aphex Twin, in case you haven't been keeping up with the last few posts), under the pseudonym "Powerpill". And if you are familiar with his work, then you can probably guess pretty easily what this album is going to be like. No, really. Guess...

A-ha! You're right! What we have are some insanely weird and incredibly well-thought out techno remixes of the Pac-Man video game theme.

You would think 5 remixes of the same cheesy song would get old pretty quickly. But no. This crazy EP keeps changing so much it's schizophrenic.

BLUE ROOM RELEASED - "Signs Of Life"

BLUE ROOM RELEASED - "Signs Of Life" (1998)

I love this album with all of my heart. It is simply amazing. Very cool psy/dub from another techno label I really like, Blue Room Released. This compilation is way slower and more mellow than most of the Goa/Psytrance stuff BRR usually put out back then. But I wouldn't describe this as ambient dub either, because this is still very danceable!

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. :-)

THE STARSEEDS - "Parallel Life"

THE STARSEEDS - "Parallel Life" (1998)

This is a really cool album! I came across it at a music store in Boulder back in 2000-2001. I was, of course, familiar with the two tracks from this album that appear on "Feed Your Head volume 3" compilation, so I snatched it right up and bought it.

I think you could call this album "Ambient Electro-Pop". Sort of a cross between Slowdive, Enya and old GusGus. A note of interest: The track "Sonne Mond und Sterne" was used in a really cool Volkswagen commercial back in the late 90's. See if you remember it. It's really pretty.

The Starseeds are: Alex McGowan and Regina Danhof (aka: Regina From The Future). As you can see in the photo below, these people have done some serious hallucinogens in their day.

MAYKO - "Shringara" (1998)

One of the absolute best ambient tribal dub albums I have ever heard. I saw this in a record store one day and was familiar with the Makyo track which opens the Planet Dog "Feed Your Head, Volume 2" compilation, which I posted in my previous post - so I thought I would give it a whirl. And boy, am I glad I did. This album is sure to take your mind, body and spirit on a journey you will not soon forget! Amazing, beautiful, chilling, hypnotic and supurb in every aspect of the word. Put this album on to fall asleep to, and you're going to be in for some pleasant dreams!

My favorite songs on this album are: 'Chandan', 'Shringara', 'A Curious Yellow...' and 'Shanti Shanti'.

NIGHTMARES IN WAX - "Birth Of A Nation" (1981)

Another great score from E.C.R.! This is a fun little EP from Nightmares In Wax! Not Nightmares ON Wax, but Nightmares IN Wax. Haven't heard of them? Maybe you have heard of their later band, "Dead Or Alive" ("You spin me right round baby, right round like a record baby...")

This is darker and more perverted, which I think you could accurately describe as Bauhaus meets My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. If you like either one of those bands, you owe it to yourself to check this out. It's really short and well worth your time!

CAPTAIN COMATOSE - "Going Out"

CAPTAIN COMATOSE - "Going Out" (2003)

A wonderful little surprise I came across one day. I had heard the track "Price Gun Baby" on the GusGus 'Mixed Live' CD, and fell in love with it. It has a really sleazy, disco-electro sound that for some reason or another totally enamored me. I looked everywhere for the album it came from, and since it is (already) out of print, my search was turning up nothing... UNTIL - one glorious day when I was working at the local Sam Goody, somebody came in with a bunch of used CDs and DVDs to sell to the store, and lo and behold - there was Captain Comatose! I'm sure I scared the guy, because I gasped and snatched it up really quick, and even did a little celebratory dance! I'm actually pretty damn sure he thought I was a total mental case (which I'm not debating), because he even told me it was one of the worst albums he had ever heard in his life. I'm sure my bringing that up makes you want to check this out REALLY bad... LOL. But presonally, I think this album is 100% coolness! I have played this for quite a few people, and NO ONE has disliked it. The guy that sold it to the store was a metal-head heroin junkie, so he probably just didn't dig the electro scene...

I very very much recommend this album! If you like super-weird electronic "psychedelic pop" (which is what i refer to this album as), then I guarantee you will like this!

My top 4 picks on this album are "Price Gun Baby", "Mr. Monkey", "Comatose Captain" and "Baby".

DEATH CUBE K - "Tunnel" (1999)

Here's a horse of a different color when it comes to ambient music! This is an amazingly creepy and abstract album from one of my favorite guitarists and all-around musicians, Brian Carroll, aka BUCKETHEAD! I've seen him more times live than I have any other musician on the planet and have never been disappointed. Granted this album is the polar opposite of the stuff I've seen him play live, but that's why he's one of my favorites. He has over 30 albums, and almost all of them are completely different from each other, and 'Tunnel' is a shining example! This album is a collaboration between him and Bill Laswell.

MORT GARSON / JACQUES WILSON - "The Wozard Of Iz"

MORT GARSON / JACQUES WILSON - "The Wozard Of Iz" (1968)

This album is one of the main reasons I started this blog in the first place. I would have posted it sooner, but I thought I would build up my page a bit before I did, because I'm afraid that anything I post after this might pale in comparison...

I picked this up from Vinnie Rattolle's Records. I think that if I tried to explain this album myself, I would'nt do it justice. So here's a review I found online (From MarkAllenCam.com):

Mort Garson was a hippie-ish electronic music scientist and guru, who specialized in the more extreme possibilities of the moog. One of his most ambitious projects was a single spoken word LP for each sign of the zodiac, set to an electronic score. He also recorded the moog album "Electronic Hair Pieces" - that one with the great cover. "The Wozard of Iz" was one of his later recordings, and was a collaboration with Jacques Wilson (who apparently wrote and conceived the project). The musical, which might have been intended to go beyond just a recorded album, is a psycho-electronic re-working of "The Wizard of Oz" that sounds like the soundtrack to the greatest LSD/freak-out/moog/synth/electronic musical that never was. This oddity is a hysterical and typical leftist/hippie commentary on the socioeconomic human condition of the average American in 1968, and uses the analogy of Dorothy taking a "trip" from Kansas for a brighter and better world where one can really be "free."
The record begins over a kooky electronic score, while a male voice (with a deep Brooklyn accent) intones:
"This is the story of why Dorothy began her search for the Wonderful Wozard of Iz! Or somewhere... over... what rainbow? Our Dorothy... locked into one suburban acre of negative vibrations... boxed in with a pair of authority symbols; a hypnotized aunt, and a mesmerized uncle, who had turned life off... and turned the television set... on... and on ...AND ON!!!"
Then the music builds and builds as another voice commands Dorothy:
"Congratulations Dorothy, you're about to join the ranks of other famous teenage drop-outs... like Shirley Temple, Candy, and Tallulah Bankhead!"
To which a synthesized male voice in the background repeats over and over:
"Leave the driving to us! Leave the driving to ussssss!"
...to which the voice of Dorothy makes it's first appearance and sexily coos:
"I'm out of the coffin... I'm out of the box... Kansas City isn't where it's at... it's a place where people throw rocks at dreams, and the dreams shouldn't be stoned... only the dreamer. I want to be in a place where I can see a stranger, and offer him a flower. I want that kind of power!"
And that's just in the first few minutes. The record goes on and on and on like that. Dorothy meets a bag lady "on a bus" who tries to hand her some pamphlets written by an army general from "Normalville" ... but Dorothy convinces the army general to "...trade his dog tags in for love beads..." and the lady on the bus eventually gets attacked by some "free press" pamphlets, and becomes The Wicked Old Witch in protest. Dorothy eventually decides to "...find the Great Wozard of Iz... because if I find out where the Woz was, I'd find out where it's at!" Then she gets advised by some more witches on busses to leave "Upset Strip" road in search of "the yellow green road" past the land of "surf and muscle tan" where she notes "...everyone has sunburned teeth from smiling so much." The scarecrow she eventually meets is an excessive consumer who buys too many American gas-guzzling cars and who has substituted "things" for "zing" and decides to follow Dorothy on her quest for the Wozard who can perhaps help him "think" instead of "thing." All the while, insanity-inducing electronic sounds bloop, swerve, echo and boom in the background. This LP is a (fractured) MASTERPIECE!
The rest of the album goes all over the place... using plenty of instruments and a whole chorus of vocalists. The songs sound like they could be in ANY musical... and it's a wonder that the production never made it anywhere past an LP recording. The voice of Dorothy is provided by sometime Lee Hazelwood vocalist/partner Suzie Jane Hokum. There are rumors that this woman is actually Nancy Sinatra (it certainly sounds like her)... but looking at some of the discussions about this album on the web... it looks like the verdict is still undecided as to whether it is her or not. It could be... or it may be just a vinyl compleatist nerd's urban legend.
Now I won't say any more about this great record except that you should keep an eye peeled for it... and hear it if you can. It's a total blast.

"BLOODLETTING" (Soundtrack)

CHRISTOPHER KELLY - "Bloodletting" (1997)

I was going to post this on Valentine's Day, but I was too busy wallowing in my own self pity... ;-)

So here you go - one of my favorite b-horror/romance movies of all time, with much of the same cast of the previous Tempe soundtrack I posted, "Polymorph", including James L. Edwards, Ariauna Albright, and Sasha Graham. This one also features two of my favorites, Scooter McCrae and Tina Krause.

I guess the making of this movie was ten times worse than Hell, for many reasons, and it ended a lot of close personal friendships. Which really sucks, but the good thing is that you really can't tell in their performances. Everyone did a really great job. Tina Krause was even sick with pneumonia when she was filming her scenes, but you couldn't really tell. It might have even added to her character.

Here's the film's synopsis from the Tempe website:

SYNOPSIS: Serena Stalin wanted to learn from the best. So she tracked down Butch Harlow, one of the world's most notorious serial killers, and blackmailed him into teaching her the fine art of murder. Now, as the lessons begin, as the teacher and his bloodthirsty student leave a trail of horribly mutilated victims in their wake, they are about to uncover the horrible secrets that bind them together, the unspeakable passion that forces them to kill, over and over again...

Once again, this is a really good soundtrack. It has the same feel as the movie, and is never boring. I think you will like this one. I have also included the original screenplay.

"POLYMORPH" (Soundtrack)

MATTHEW JASON WALSH - "Polymorph" (1996)

This score is from the sci-fi horror spoof, "Polymorph", from one of my favorite film labels, Tempe Video. This film stars B-horror veterans James L. Edwards, Ariauna Albright, Sasha Graham and Pete Jacelone. Here's the film's synopsis, taken from the Tempe website:

SYNOPSIS: Called deep into the forest to help search for a fallen meteorite, a group of interns instead discover an isolated cabin with a dead body inside — and a lethal gang of drug-runners there to protect their investment. But the dead body has risen again, and it holds a dark secret that will soon reveal itself...

Little do they know, the meteorite has brought with it an organism that can emulate anything it comes into contact with. Soon, their transportation is cut off...nobody knows exactly who’s who...and no one is quite sure how to kill something that they can’t even find!

The score is pretty cool. It ranges from funny to spacey, from cheesy to serious. I like it a lot, it has a neat variety on it, and it keeps the feelings from the film's scenes. There's 40 tracks in all, so I am not going to list them all on here. They are all labeled correctly in the zip file, and numbered.

"ROXANNA" (Soundtrack)

THE PINK DELICATES - "Roxanna" (2002)

Not only the best Seduction Cinema score out there, but one of the coolest film scores I have ever heard. I don't want to build it up too much by saying that though... it just really fit my tastes in music! Trippy, psychedelic instrumental rock that stands on its own as a really good album! The Pink Delicates are: Kevin Neblung on guitar and bass, and John Fedele on drums and organ.

The movie, starring Misty Mundae, Josh Robinson (Blood For The Muse), Syn DeVil, and Darian Caine, is another dark'n'stark sexy remake of the ultra-erotic softcore 1970 grindhouse classic from Nick Philips.

"LUSTFUL ADDICTION" (Soundtrack)

TIM TOMORROWS - "Lustful Addiction" (2002)

Another Seduction Cinema score, this time from one of my favorite SC films, 'Lustful Addiction', written, directed and starring the one and only Misty Mundae (aka Erin Brown). Co-starring Ruby LaRocca and Darian Caine, this is a gritty, psychedelic, twisted, and yes - even incredibly sexy remake of the 1969 Nick Philips grindhouse classic of the same name.

This score is from Tim Tommorows, who worked a lot with Seduction Cinema/E.I. Independent Cinema - not only musically, but as an actor too, with roles in movies like Spiderbabe, Lord of the G-Strings, Gladiator Eroticvs, and The Girl Who Shagged Me. But, um... don't let that dissuade you from checking this out, because musically, this guy is fantastic! "DR. JEKYLL & MISTRESS HYDE" (Soundtrack)

DON MIKE - "Dr. Jekyll & Mistress Hyde" (2004)

Here's a really cool score from the Seduction Cinema film, 'Dr. Jekyll & Mistress Hyde'. This is one of the darker, artsier films from SC, from director Anthony Marsiglia (Lust For Dracula, Sin Sisters, Chantal). The film is sort of a psycho-sexual acid trip version of Jekyll, which despite the copious amounts of nudity and lesbian sex, follows the original story line surprisingly well. Shades of David Lynch's "Mulholland Dr." can be found, as well as amazing cinematography and this really cool soundtrack from musician Don Mike.
